In the past years, VVSG has actively worked on localizing the SDGs in Flanders, providing municipalities with materials and inspiration on awareness raising and policy planning. With success: 178 out of the 300 Flemish municipalities have now integrated the SDGs into their multi-annual policy plans (2020-2025).

In 2020, 47 countries will be reporting to the UN on their progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UCLG and the CIB Working Group are organizing a series of webinars in April on the role of local and regional governments and their associations in this reporting process, to ensure that the important work of local and regional governments on this agenda receives enough visibility and attention.
In the past few years, UCLG submitted a report on the voice and actions of local and regional governments on SDGs and their implementation at the yearly High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development.
Localising SDGs in Germany
CIB looks back on a very successful UCLG World Congress in Durban. The matrix of CIB members’ activities already showcased that various CIB members would be very active in Durban and this was indeed the case.

Local democracy and international solidarity are under stress. Local governments play a crucial role in international relations and programmes – how can we, as CIB Working Group, continue to raise awareness for the role and responsibilities of local governments in development cooperation, aid effectiveness and democracy? And how can we assure sufficient means for local governments, both for domestic challenges, as for international work?
The date for the second edition of the Venice City Solution 2030 has been released. From the 24th until the 26th of October, this event will embark on the role of local and regional governments in creating active citizenship, and how the SDGs could facilitate this process, working closely together with social and economic stakeholders, communities and citizens.
The event is organized by UN-Habitat, UNDP and the Italian Association for CEMR and financially supported by Platforma and will take place in Venice, Italy.
In order to achieve Agenda 2030, all of us will need to learn from some of the greatest innovators, mobilizers, connectors, storytellers, communicators, visualizers and includers from across the Globe! Therefore, the UN SDG Action Awards recognize outstanding achievements and innovative efforts to promote action on the SDGs. Applications are now open for the 2019 awards.
