Following the signing of the Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA) between United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) and the European Commission (EC) earlier this year, UCLG Africa is now conducting a series of Regional Seminars across the African continent.

The EC and UCLG Africa Framework Partnership Agreement, which will run from 2015 to 2017, is aimed at the strengthening of local governments of Africa, UCLG Africa is organizing 5 Regional Seminars aimed at contributing to the realisation of the following goals, that are begin targeted throughout the Partnership Agreement:

  1. Participation: strengthen the political voice of local authorities through fostering greater participation of African people in Africa’s development;
  2. Conflict and peace building: Improvement of the contribution of local authorities to the building of a common Africa and EU agenda on conflict prevention and peace building;
  3. Association capacity building: Contribution to the strengthening of the capacity of national and regional associations of local authorities in Africa to execute their responsibilities;
  4. Advocacy: Improvement of the local governments’ inputs on propositions on global governance issues in the framework of African Union and United Nations;
  5. UCLG Africa secretariat: Strengthening of the capacity of the UCLG Africa Secretariat and network as the political representative of African local authorities and their support structure;

The Regional Seminars represent an excellent opportunity for national associations of local governments in Africa, mayors or representatives of capital African cities to contribute to the strategic partnership. The meetings in Dakar and Pretoria already took place. Entebbe, Brazzaville and Noakchott will host the other seminars in September and October.
