The 2026 Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit in New York concluded with the adoption of a joint communiqué calling for greater powers, access to finance and stronger partnerships for cities to address shared urban challenges.
The communiqué focuses on three interconnected priorities: housing, climate and energy, and migration. Mayors call for greater local authority and better access to public and international finance, while highlighting the role of cities in delivering affordable and resilient housing, accelerating the clean energy transition, strengthening climate resilience and supporting migrants and displaced people.
The communiqué also highlights actions cities are already taking and calls for stronger cooperation between national and local governments to enable cities to deliver further on these priorities.
