Champions Mayor Nondo and Mayor Nyukwana participated in the 2nd Preparatory Committee (PrepCom2) of Habitat III, which took place in Nairobi from 14 to 16 April in Nairobi, Kenya. It was the second meeting leading to the 3rd UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), that will take place in Quito in October 2016. The Habitat III agenda will assess the Habitat II commitments from the 1996 Istanbul conference and will further respond to challenges of urbanization.
“The funding of local governments for the New Urban Agenda can lead to mismanagement if not accompanied by skills,” said Mayor Nyukwana from Emalahleni South Africa), referring to the need to ensure the new urban agenda has sufficient attention for capacity building.
Mayor Nondo also advocated for the importance of capacity building and emphasized the need to involve local governments in shaping the policies at national and international level, so that effective development can take place.
