In a strategic effort to advance women’s representation and leadership in local government, the Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) is implementing a robust capacity building programme under the Partnerships for Municipal Innovation – Women in Local Leadership (PMI-WILL) project. Delivered in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), this initiative is empowering up to 1,200 women potential leaders across Zambia to contest and thrive in local elected office.
The programme, which blends training and mentorship, aims to enhance women's knowledge, leadership skills, and confidence, thereby improving their readiness to effectively participate in local governance. Training sessions are designed using a peer-to-peer learning and interactive approach, covering key thematic areas such as:
- The Decentralization and Local Government System in Zambia
- Planning and Launching an Electoral Campaign
- Campaign Messaging
- Fundraising for Elections
- Communications and Media Engagements
- Social Media Campaigns
Beyond the formal training modules, the initiative also serves as a safe space for networking, peer support, and knowledge exchange, contributing to a growing sense of solidarity and ambition among aspiring women leaders.
To date, the initiative has trained 459 women who meet the basic eligibility criteria to contest as Mayors, Council Chairpersons, or Councillors. Notably, strong participation in Western, Northern, and North-Western provinces underscores the growing momentum and commitment among women to engage in the political space, despite ongoing social and informational barriers.
Recognizing that capacity building must go beyond training, LGAZ has also introduced a mentorship programme. This component connects aspiring women leaders with seasoned former Mayors and Council Chairpersons who serve as volunteer mentors. These mentors provide practical guidance, share leadership experiences, and support mentees in navigating the political landscape.
The inaugural mentorship session, held in February 2025 in Ndola, Copperbelt Province, convened 54 mentees and 4 mentors, setting the stage for long-term mentor-mentee engagement through both online and in-person sessions. The mentorship initiative will be scaled up to all 10 provinces, ensuring inclusive reach and equitable support.
Women interested in joining the capacity building and mentorship programme are encouraged to apply by completing the official application form. Eligible candidates must meet the basic requirements to contest in local government elections.
Through PMI-WILL, LGAZ is not only investing in women’s leadership but also contributing meaningfully to inclusive, gender-responsive governance in Zambia.
