The VVSG, the Flemish Association for Cities and Municipalities, is looking into the opportunities, challenges and good practices on international, intermunicipal cooperation, especially regarding topics of international cooperation and global citizenship, or so-called ‘local global policy’.

In Flanders, local global policy is a voluntary responsibility of local governments. In addition, multiple municipalities have very limited budget and personnel for this topic. As such, we want to check if and how intermunicipal cooperation can be used as a strategy to make local global policy more efficient, effective and innovative.

We would strongly benefit to learn more about experiences in other countries. Do you know of good practices where municipalities, for example:

  • work together in international partnerships;
  • organise joint events or jointly develop educational materials and publications on global topics for their citizens;
  • pool together resources for financial support to non-profit organisation or humanitarian aid;
  • share a civil servant working on international affairs;

or any other examples of good practices of international, inter-municipal cooperation? Please get in touch with Hanne Albers, hanne.albers@vvsg.be, from the VVSG!
