The Local Government Handbook: South Africa 2012 provides a complete, yet concise overview of all 278 municipalities and aims to provide a clear understanding of each municipality and its place in South Africa, as well as a directory of the relevant mayors and contact details in each municipality.

The information in this handbook was supplied by municipalities in a survey conducted between July and October 2011. The handbook presents 278 municipalities and numerous demarcations, names and other changes over the years.
