From May 31st to June 3rd, The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Annual General Meeting took place in Vancouver. The focus during this meeting was on Local Economic Development. A day-long training on this subject was given by Millier Dickinson Blais, a leading consultancy on LED in Canada. The videos from this training are now available.

FCM is currently overseeing three technical assistance projects that are funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) and which seek to improve economic opportunities for overseas partners. These projects include the Municipal Local Economic Development (MLED) project in Ukraine, the Municipal Partners for Economic Development (MPED) project which is implemented in Vietnam, Cambodia, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Nicaragua and Bolivia, and the Caribbean Local Economic Development (CARILED) project implemented in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Guyana, St. Lucia, and other countries.

Approximately forty representatives from partner countries associated with these technical assistance projects attended the FCM Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, from May 31st to June 3rd, 2013. In this context, Millier Dickinson Blais –a leading consultancy on LED in Canada– delivered a one-day workshop for partners. The training drew upon a range of current Canadian municipal best practices, discussed the origins and intent of these approaches, and reflected on ways in which this information and experience may be relevant to local government officials and economic development practitioners. The four videos below present key moments from that workshop, including information on the evolution from industrial know-how to knowledge industries and leading practices on incubation, acceleration and generation.
