For UCLG Africa, 2018 will be a pivotal year. Key event is the 8th edition of the Africities Summit in Marrakech, Morocco, on 4-8 December 2018. However, the African Regional Section of UCLG and its African Academy of Local Authorities (ALGA) have many other activities lined up.
Africities 2018
This years’ edition of the Africities Summit will focus on the central theme is “The transition to sustainable cities and territories: the role of African local authorities”. The event will address the issue of the future of cities, territories and local communities in Africa, with taking as a starting point the situation of Africa in globalization and urbanization; in highlighting the dimensions of the transition from current mutations; and in emphasizing the role and strategy of African Local Governments in the transition.
In the months prior to this high-level event, UCLG Africa will work to drive and unite new members and to support and empower those who are already active in the network.
Operationalizing ALGA’s training offer
In the past year, ALGA particularly invested in acquiring name recognition and in seeking affiliation with existing, established institutes in the various African regions. This year, the Academy plans to further design, implement and disseminate its training offer. Topics which will feature on the curriculum include: localization of SDGs, Participatory Budgeting, local leadership, territorial coaching, New Urban Agenda, modernization of HRM, participatory budgeting, local finance, Culture and Heritage…. The trainings on localizing the SDGs will take place within a strong partnership with UCLG and the MILE institute of the City of Ethekwini, which was established last year.
Report on HRM at African local level
In addition to the organization and facilitation of trainings, ALGA also plans to publish a first report in 2018, on Human Resources Management at the African local level. This document will zoom in on the state of the issue in various countries, suggest reforms and share best practices.
