The International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) is located in Visby on the island of Gotland. The centre is an independent non-profit organization with strong links to the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR).The purpose of establishing the centre is to create a “hub” for local government involvement in development cooperation. Yet another ambition is to take part in the creation of well-functioning and lasting networks and partnerships.
ICLD has three main areas of operation:
-
knowledge and capacity development by providing a research network and meeting place; a centre of knowledge
-
municipal partnerships where Swedish and international partners cooperate on finding solutions for mutual challenges
-
International Training Programmes directed at strengthening institutional and capacity development in developing countries.
ICLD is financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and will be fully established by the end of 2009 with a staff of about ten employees.
“I think that ICLD has unique possibilities of knowledge development through combining practical experience, training and research activities within the same organisation,” says Birgitta Svensk, Secretary General.
