In October 2013, DeLoG has launched in cooperation with the Urban Institute's Local Public Sector Initiative a research project on the role of the local public sector (LPS) in achieving development goals, that are relevant for the post-2015 global development agenda.
The purpose of the project is to analyse how the LPS, and especially local governments, play a significant role in the delivery of essential public services. For this research, a standardised Local Public Sector (LPS) Country Survey was developed, in which detailed information on the role of local governments in the delivery of public health and education services within 40 countries was found.
Based on the data collected so far, can be suggested that countries with a greater investment in resources at the local level have a better sectorial development progress. Countries in which local public services are funded directly by central governments are not associated with the same improvements in development. These findings can be useful for governments in order to improve the achievement of development goals.
