In the early 21st century, cities have gained unprecedented recognition for their role in tackling global challenges. With more than half the world's population now living in urban areas, policymakers are increasingly focused on empowering local governments to shape and implement international agendas. The G20 countries, home to a large urban population, rely on national municipal associations to bridge local and national levels of governance. This roundtable brings a diverse range of stakeholders, who are strategically positioned to influence policy, advocate for local needs, and support multilevel governance initiatives like the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP). CHAMP fosters collaboration among cities, regions, and national governments, particularly on climate action aligned with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The roundtable aims to strengthen multilevel governance by aligning local, regional, and national policies, particularly on climate change. It serves as a platform for collective advocacy, allowing national municipal associations to push for greater support for local governments in international policy frameworks. The meeting also encourages partnerships across municipalities in G20 countries, promoting joint projects, funding opportunities, and resource sharing. In addressing themes like U20’s focus on climate and multilateral reform, the roundtable demonstrates how collaborative governance can drive effective and coordinated responses to urban and global challenges.
